The first large-diameter TBM tailor-made for China’s first mountain rail transit project recently rolled off the production line in Deyang, Sichuan Province. Jointly developed by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG) and China Railway No.5 Engineering Group (CREC-5), the TMB, known as “Shutong,” has an excavation diameter of 10.23 meters, a total length of 222 meters and a total weight of about 2,500 tons. It will be used in the construction of the Zijing Tunnel of the Dujiangyan-Siguniangshan mountain rail transit project undertaken by CREC-5. The 10.4-km Zijing tunnel is a control project along the line, including a 5.1-km TBM excavation section that traverses several faults, soft rock large deformation and rock explosion areas.
