The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is also known as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road, originally announced by President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China during his official visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia in September and October 2013. The initiative calls for the integration of the region into a cohesive economic area through building infrastructure, increasing cultural exchanges, and broadening trade.
