Anthem of CREC—“Trailbreaker”
In recent days, the Conference and Exhibition of the 7th International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA) Tunneling Awards 2021 was held virtually, selecting seven winners among the 24 competing projects and individuals.
The Large-diameter shield tunnel engineering project in karst strata of sea area in the Barracuda Bay, a full-line control project of Dalian Metro Line 5, won the award of Project of the Year. The project was invested by the China Railway Group Limited (CREC), designed by China Railway Northern Investment Group and constructed by the First Engineering Bureau of CREC.
The winner of the Beyond Engineering is the sustainable, efficient and low-carbon solution for the disposal of shield spoil developed during the construction of Shenzhen Metro Line 14. The project was submitted by organizations including the China Railway Southern Investment Group and constructed mainly by China Railway Hi-Tech Industry Co., Ltd.
The two projects are also the only Chinese projects in the tunneling industry to win the award this year, which demonstrates the strength of the CREC in the global tunneling industry.

The ITA is a non-profit organization founded in 1974 and headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 2015, the international competition "the ITA Tunneling and Underground Space Awards" seeks and rewards the most ground-breaking innovation and outstanding projects and engineers in tunneling and underground construction. The ITA will first come out with the name lists of projects and engineers among all excellent tunneling projects and engineers in the world, and a panel of dozens of experts will select out the final winners. The awards are reckoned as the Oscar Awards in the global tunneling industry. Around eight winners would be confirmed among the 30 or so nominations each year. As of 2021, seven ITA Tunneling and Underground Space Awards conference and exhibition has been successfully held.
